State Certification for Sober Living Homes in Massachusetts is Optional – But There’s a Catch
Residents of sober homes are expected to abstain from alcohol and drug use, other than prescribed medications, and to refrain from prescription misuse. Payment terms for sober homes vary, and residents are given written house agreements. MASH-certified sober homes are governed by standards that address safety from an administrative, operational, property, and “good neighbor” perspective. Effective September 1, 2016, state agencies and their vendors shall only be able to refer clients to certified sober homes.

All MASH-certified sober homes follow the National Alliance for Recovery Residences standards and have been independently inspected. Most of our community has been through an inpatient rehab program or halfway house and have learned about the disease of addiction and the tools needed in order to stay sober. All community members are subject to random drug screens and daily breathalyzing. This is a critical part of our routine to ensure accountability.

Members houses have all been inspected and certified as being in compliance with the standards that MASH has established. All member organizations have signed a code of ethics document, and all house managers have completed one or more training sessions. We are active from the local to the state level, continuously advocating for the rights of sober home residents and operators. One way we do this is by spreading and enforcing the MASH Resident Bill of Rights. The primary mission of the Minnesota Association of Sober Homes Inc., is to promote the establishment, successful management and growth of high quality, community-based sober-living residences.
